A new study in theNew England Journal of Medicinesuggests that a lower dose of erectile dysfunction medication could help men with symptoms of heart disease or hypertension. But researchers found it was not as effective for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, even when men had high levels of erectile dysfunction. Bate, a professor of epidemiology and a senior author of the paper, said it was too early to tell what effect that might have on men taking the drug, and also that it would not be effective in lowering the rate of sexual problems, including impotence.
The study, which included more than 25,000 men, compared the effects of sildenafil with placebo, using a computer-assisted technique. Sildenafil was effective in a small percentage of the men with high blood pressure, but had not been as effective in the control group of patients with hypertension or erectile dysfunction.
The researchers found that the use of sildenafil was not associated with improved erections, compared with placebo.
A low dose of sildenafil was also effective, although it did not reach statistical significance, as the researchers did not find an increase in sexual dysfunction, which is often a symptom of a condition that affects sexual desire and function.
